What about something like ‘Best unusual use of a blog’ or something. Might be no entries, but it would be nice to see what people are doing with the technology – if there isn’t a category like this we mightn’t get to see that there out there as people wouldn’t know where to submit their unusual blogs…
I use blogger to update BifSniff cartoons for example (bifsniff.com), which I assume would go under the heading Art, but someone else might be using blog technology to do something that wouldn’t fit under any of the headings.
Just a suggestion.

Also, we should divide “Best Blogger” up into Pro and Amateur divisions – some people are journalists or professional activists, after all.

Does the idea of splitting the best blogger into Pro vs Am not work somewhat to the supposedly philosophy of blogging, that civilians are on some sort of imginary online par with journalists? Just a thought, although I am completely open your idea.

Well, journalists and fulltime activists are researching and producing content as their actual working profession. This gives an enormous advantage over everyone else, who don’t have the resources in time to compete.

Good to see an Irish language category: of course I fully support the sentiment behind it. However, I would strongly urge that the description be broadened to “Best Use of the Irish Language in a Blog”.
The reason is this: as far as I am aware, there are only 7 of us who blog, or podcast, exclusively in Irish. There are, however, many more who, although blogging primarily in English, also post entries which are at least partly, if not entirely, in Irish. By blogging in English, they open their thoughts to an international audience. By their use of Irish, they express themselves in a uniquely Irish way. There is no contradiction in any of this: the tradition of bilingualism in Irish writing goes back hundreds of years, and because of their larger audience, bilingual bloggers probably do more to promote the language than those of us who’s audience is limited to Irish speakers.
This is just my opinion – what do other’s think?

Further complicating the “Irish language blog” category is that some of us are not in Ireland and others (Panu, me) are not even of Irish descent. So, if you narrowed the category to bloggers blogging in Irish in Ireland, there would be a very short list indeed.
Opening up the field to “best use of the Irish language” is good, although it becomes very difficult to get a list of bloggers to nominate. And then the question of judging is more difficult: does a nominated blogger pick one post to represent himself? It’s not fair, for instance, to just judge blog against blog if a blogger who posts occasionally in Irish is judged against someone who posts solely in Irish.
In a way, it is terribly discouraging to write in the Irish language, so it’s good to support people who use it regardless of whether they’re writing in it exclusively or not…

Regarding the Irish language blog category, i was one of those who suggested this category and at the time I was thinking of those who blog exclusively as Gaeilge because i’d like those people to get some recognition. There’s not nearly enough Irish on the web, IMO, so it’s great to see people like Conn & Nicole here using the language.
Conn’s suggestion is a good one but judging is harder as is nominating blogs. And what is “use of the Irish language”, is it use in a logo or a few words here ot there? It’s hard to both nominate people as well as judge the nominees.
Also if, for example, I were to be nominated for such an award (not that I deserve to be as I don’t use Irish much at all) i’d be ashamed to be put into the same group as blogs like an t-Imeall, Cuisle, Blag Shomhairle or Panu’s blog who actually blog IN Irish.
In regards to the Irish category, I’d like to let the audience decide. I’ll go with what you guys think, within reason of course. Maca, don’t be ashamed, be honoured 🙂 Everyone is not at the same level or quality or speed or experience. The only clones in the blogopshere are spam blogs.

I think this guy’s writing is great – in either language. I’d hate to think he wasn’t eligible for nomination for “Best Irish …” just because he also posts in English.
Bring back the “Person we’d like to see blogging” so that John Spillane can win a prize.
What provisions are in place to ensure that no conflict of interests occur? ie: judges voting for themselves, bloggers voting multiple times for their own blog etc?

What about “MOST BIGOTED BLOG” so A Tangled Web can win an award, though they refuse to accept the Irishness of their Blog !
My personal opition is that although i dont mean to contradict anyone, i belive that there are more than 7 blogs/podcasts in the irish language ,though many of these arent as acive as others. I would suggest blogs/podcasts that are say 60% or so as Gaeilge
